Sleepless nights and sugary delights

Sometimes after a massive work week your body really needs sleep; other times, it just needs a cronut!
After a very busy Friday night, following a very busy week, after what had been a very busy month, I was particularly exhausted. Throw some insomnia into the mix at random occasion just to spice things up and you are looking at one tired little lady. So I was looking forward to a Saturday morning sleep-in like nobody’s business. Too bad my body didn’t feel the same way…
I could have slept til midday if I wanted because my husband was at work and I had the apartment all to myself. Instead I found myself wide awake at 7.30am…now, I know some of you might be thinking ‘that’s a pretty good sleep-in Joni – I’m normally up by 4am so I have time to run a marathon, roast my own coffee beans, dust my house, read the newspaper, check out Instagram and fit in an hour-long yoga session before eating breakfast, all by 7.30am!’ Well, aren’t you just wonderful? Sorry, that sounded a bit cranky. I blame it on the lack of sleep…
Being totally honest, I am not what you would call a morning person. Not in the least. Not at all. So considering I had a whole morning set aside to get some much needed sleep credits you can imagine my disappointment. But there was simply no way of getting around the fact that I was wide awake, despite being incredibly tired.
So I did what any self respecting young lady would do and dragged myself out of bed and into the shower. After struggling into some clothes and making an acceptable attempt at makeup and hair I fell into my car and headed to one of my favourite little cafés for a much needed caffeine hit.
While I was ordering my coffee I noticed, to my absolute delight, there was a single glistening cronut sitting on display just waiting to be devoured. I had been wanting to try a cronut since I first hear of their delicious existence. A cross between a donut and a croissant, it was just as good as I had imagined. Between that and a smooth cappuccino, I found myself feeling much more human.
Two hours later though I was on the couch watching season four of Downton Abbey, but hey, I had a good run while it lasted!
