The only time I am ever actually excited to get out of bed before 5.30am involves hot air balloons, a beautiful sunrise and about three cups of coffee!
The Canberra Balloon Spectacular is one of my favourite festivals and totally worth the early start. For nine days a big bunch of hot air balloons in all sorts of colours and shapes take off from the Lawns of Old Parliament House.
The Canberra Balloon Spectacular is considered to be one of the best and longest running hot air ballooning events in the world.
This year, my husband and I decided to walk from our apartment to the launch site and then back home via a cafe for breakfast – hence the 5.30am start!
Normally the balloons begin inflating from 6.15am before taking to the sky, but due to less than ideal weather conditions the balloons stayed tethered today.
There was still a fantastic atmosphere onsite as the balloons began to inflate, you can get up close to the balloons and even speak to the pilots. Before too long there was a giant owl, a whale and its baby, and even a ballon inspired by the movie Up!
The walk back was beautiful with kayakers, rowers and dragon boaters out and about on Lake Burley Griffin. Breakfast at Penny University in Kingston, plus a couple of much needed coffees, made for a wonderful start to our Saturday…
