What you need to survive a newborn’s first weeks

Sleep deprivation. Baby cuddles. Dirty nappies. Unconditional love. Having a newborn is a mixture of amazing and awkward experiences.

Our gorgeous baby boy is two weeks old and I’m slowly getting my head around this whole mum thing! For someone used to schedules, lists and order, the past 14 days has at times been a shock to the system and I’m quickly learning to adapt, adjust and be more flexible. 

I’ve been lucky enough to have family stay with us on and off since we left the hospital and help with cleaning, cooking and cuddles, but beyond that some of the things that have helped include:

  • Easy eats: I had stocked my freezer with meat and prepared meals and my pantry with canned goods, rice and pasta before I went into labour so that we would easily prepare dinners once we got back home. Muesli bars, fruit, ice blocks, toast and Milo have been particularly easy and delicious snacks.
  • Social media: It has been great to still feel connected to friends and family through social media despite being at home most of these past two weeks. Reading the beautiful messages about our new arrival has filled my heart with joy, and seeing life continue beyond my four walls gives me a sense of perspective and normality.
  • Walks: I have tried to get out and about as much as my body would allow and found walks to my local shops for a coffee or some supplies has been a nice way to ease back into exercise. It’s also a lovely time to catch up with my husband and talk about all sorts of things.
  • Skincare products: I haven’t had much time or a desire to put makeup on yet, but it does make me feel great to have a shower, cleanse, moisturise and have my skin glow. As always, I love all my Go-To Skin Care products, plus I’m making the most of my Body Shop Vitamin E spray, Bio Oil for my stretch marks and Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Lotion. 
  • Coffee: Not only is the caffeine a welcome friend after particularly long nights, but it also gives me a great excuse to get out and go for a walk. The next step is meeting up with friends over coffee for conversation and baby cuddles.
  • Reading material: My husband bought me some magazines while in the hospital which I flick through during the day and at night, when I’m feeding at 3.30am, I’ve been reading the latest books by Lisa Gardner on my iPad to stay awake. 
  • Soft cheeses: Oh good god, I hadn’t realised just how much I had missed soft cheese during my pregnancy until I had it again (my hubby snuck in some Camembert, pepperoni and crackers on day 2 in the maternity ward!). I’ve been devouring it ever since and it makes me so darn happy.
  • Kisses: I cannot stop kissing my little baby. He just amazes me each and every single day and I am constantly overwhelmed with love for him.

    Joni I have just discovered “your little list”. Sign me up. I love it. Happy to hear you are relaxed and taking each day one at a time. I laughed about your desire for soft cheeses. Nicky asked for sushi one hour after Lizzy entered the world.
